Haemodialysis is a form of treatment for end-stage kidney failure. Basically the patient's uncleansed blood is removed from the body, passed through an artificial kidney called a dialyser and then the cleansed blood is returned to the patient's body. Removal of water and waste products occurs in the dialyser. Here excess water and waste products in the patient's blood move across a semi-permeable membrane into the dialysate while bicarbonate ions and other electrolytes move in the opposite direction into the patient's blood.

Hemodialysis may be done at home or at a dialysis centre. In Malaysia home hemodialysis is infrequently done. Most patients needing hemodialysis are dialysed at dialysis centres such as MAA-Medicare Dialysis Centres.
